We farm and process our 'awa here on the Big Island of Hawaii. We
produce high quality, potent, fresh, organic kava root products. No
herbacides or pesticides are used. We use 100% kava roots in our products.
No leaves or stems are used.
We do not buy or sell any wild crafted 'awa.
These relic 'awa patches are on either state land or private property. We
feel that these ancient 'awa patches need to be preserved and not used for
exploitation.
Our 'awa plants average 4 years old before we harvest. We grow
18 varieties of Polynesian cultivars - 12 Hawaiian varieties, 2 Micronesian
varieties, 2 Papua New Guinea varieties, 1 Tongan variety, and 1 Samoan
variety.
Corm root to lateral root ratio is about 60% corm to 40% lateral. The
Hawaiian 'awa root powders have between 10% to 19% Kavalactones. Most of our
powders have an average of 13% Kavalactones.
We sun dry the 'awa roots for 5 days then the roots are dried in our electric
dryer for one day at 120 degrees. We grind the powder in our hammer mill
using a number 10 screen to produce a very fine powder with minimal root
fibers. Powder is stored in 3 pound vacuum sealed bags to retain freshness.
Piper methysticum is an interesting and complex plant, commonly know as kava.
Known in Hawaii as 'awa, which means bitter. In Vanuatu as maloh or maloku,
as sakau in Micronesia, as 'ava in Tahiti and Samoa, yagona in Fiji, in Papua
New Guinea as keu or tigwa and other generic names, & as kava in Tonga.
Kava
has been used in Polynesia for about a 1,000 years, in ceremonies, as a
medicinal herb, and for social gatherings. Used in the traditional method it
is a safe and effective non addictive herbal supplement.

Very potent non-Hawaiian plant grown on our farm. Note the different chemotype. It is known as a two day kava because the effects could last up to 48 hours. The feelings are not as tranquil as the Hawaiian varieties.
Also known as Apu or Green Mo'i. Exceptional drinking 'awa fast acting with most effects felt in the head yet the mind stays clear. A rare plant that is very susceptible to disease.
The stems of the 'awa Hiwa plants has a deep black color like ripe eggplant.Here the word Hiwa means favorite or cherished and things that were Hiwa like all black pigs, all black taro, all black 'awa, etc. were used as offerings to the gods. Kahunas (medicine men/priests) were the ones that would drink 'awa Hiwa to obtain visions. This is a potent fast acting 'awa.

A very rare and very potent plant. Stronger than Hiwa with more zoning effects in the mind. Helps the mind to focus on the smallest details. The effects do not last as long as the other 'awas.
We make our kava tinctures from the dried 'awa roots that were milled using a
1/4" screen.
Tinctures are made using grain alcohol in our extractor which is
heated to 200 degrees and cooled via a cold water condensor. For some unknown
reason this changes the chemistry of the extract. The effects become similiar
and are so subtle that it is difficult to detect the differences.
