AWA'S USE'S PAST AND PRESENT

In 1948, Margaret Titcomb wrote a history of 'awa in Hawai'i up to that time. She referred to it as" a sacred drink of importance in many phases of Hawaiian life. Its effect is to relax mind and body and it was used by farmer and fisherman for this purpose. Medicinal Kahunas (learned men) had many uses for it. It was essential on occasions of hospitality and feasting, and as a drink of pleasure for the chiefs."

'Awa is currently used for a number of conditions, including stress and anxiety reduction, muscle relaxation, sedation, and pain relief Evidence also points to awa's effectiveness in improving memory performance and focusing attention to detail.

HOW IT WORKS

The 'awa plant is known botanically as Piper methysticum, and most of the active ingredients, called kavalactones, are found in the long lateral roots and stump, though the stem and leaf also contain small amounts. Fifteen different kavalactones have been identified so far, but only six are designated as "major kavalactones." Each has its own effects.

1 = Demethoxyyangoin       4 = Kavain
2 = Dihydrokavain       5 = Dihydromethysticin
3 = Yangonin       6 = Methysticin

The different 'awa varieties contain varying proportions of the six major kavalactones. We describe a variety's chemotype when we list its kavalactones in order, beginning with the highest percentage kavalactone and ending with its lowest. Thus, if you see a variety's chemotype described as 462153, it has a higher percentage of kavain than yangonin.

SIDE EFFECTS

No severe side effects or toxicity when kava is consumed in the traditional manner.

Frequent drinking of high doses causes a dry scaly skin condition known as kava dermopathy.

NOTE: Consuming the kava plant's leaves or stems, which contain alkaloids, may affect the liver.

Kava's history and traditional use has shown it to be a safe non-addictive and effective product.
